             Welcome to Southern Vets

We welcome pet owners to explore our website and consider using less vaccinations and preventative medicines than has become traditional.

Over recent years there has been an increasing tendency to give our pets more and more vaccinations, medications and commercial pet foods. Our belief is that this has been over done and is not in the interest of our pets "best health". We recommend pet owners give consideration to a more moderate and balanced approach. With regard to this we recommend the following:

Vaccinating adult dogs for Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus only every 3 years (see links)
Making a balanced and informed decision regarding heartworm prevention, a rare disease in Melbourne.
Not routinely treating for fleas unless there is a specific flea problem.
Only using intestinal wormers every 6 mths in adult pets.
Placing less emphasis on commercial foods and greater emphasis on raw bones, home cooking and table scraps.
GET YOUR PETS INSURED! For as little as $20 per month, in adult pets this is far more important than vaccinations, heartworm prevention and flea treatments. Please read our comment at the end of this home page then link to Pet Insurance on this page to find out why this should be the first priority of pet health.

PET INSURANCE:  "If I only had a budget of around $150 to spend on the health of my pets every year, I would definitely not vaccinate them, prevent heartworm or worry about routine flea treatments. I would insure them. Why? Because serious accidents and illness occur far, far more commonly than the diseases we vaccinate against and heartworm (in Melbourne). Every week, every veterinary clinic in Melbourne has many clients compromise on the best diagnostics and treatments available, or even consider euthenasia, due to the costs involved. This severely compromises a pets chance of recovery. With quality insurance costing as little as $13 per month,

all pet owners should insure their pets first. If the budget allows, then by all means consider vaccinations, and maybe heartworm prevention depending on your unique situation."

Dr Marcus Hayes, Senior Veterinarian Southernvets.

Please further educate yourself with our link to pet insurance above. We have no association with any insurance company, we urge pet owners to do their homework and at the very least insure your pets with any of the large number of insurance companies out there. Once insured, then consider routine health.
